Grambling, LA — Patrick Crarey II is ready for the second chapter of his HBCU experience as he begins laying a fresh foundation at Grambling State University. The veteran coach, known for his program-building success at Florida A&M and the NAIA level, was officially introduced as the new head coach of Grambling State men’s basketball, taking over a respected program with lofty expectations.

“This is indeed a proud day for Grambling State University and an exciting new chapter for our men’s basketball program,” Grambling State AD Dr. Trayvean Scott said at the Friday morning press conference.

Crarey is no stranger to the HBCU landscape. After guiding FAMU to its most wins since 2008 and a postseason berth for the first time since 2019, he has now been entrusted with continuing Grambling’s proud basketball legacy. The new Tigers head coach made it clear: he’s here to build a winner.

“As a builder, I lay the foundation, the new one myself,” Crarey said. “I’m about relationships, then championships… to enhance the brand of Grambling and to win at the highest levels.”

Crarey acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Donte’ Jackson, who led Grambling to multiple SWAC championships.

“Much respect to my brother, Donte Jackson, aka Tae Jack,” Crarey said. “He built this program with his bare hands. I will continue the tradition on the foundation of his success.”

Crarey gave special thanks to Florida A&M for his opportunity at the Division I level. “A special thank you to President Beard and Robinson at Florida A&M for giving me the opportunity to be a Division I head coach. To Angela Suggs, who I adore — thank you. From day one to the end, you worked for me and I’ll forever be grateful.”

He also acknowledged the support of former FAMU athletic director and current Virginia State AD, Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. “To Gram Fam, Tiffany Dawn Sykes — clap for her. What’s understood doesn’t need to be said. You believed before anyone. And I’ll always love you for it.”

Looking forward, Crarey offered a vision rooted in both competitive excellence and cultural pride.

“This move was about winning within an organization that believed in my capabilities from day one,” he said. “Today starts our new journey together… What you believe about yourself, others will believe about you too.”

“It’s time to let everyone know the Tigers are here.”

The HBCU basketball world got quite a shakeup last week when Donte’ Jackson left Grambling State to take over as head coach at Alabama A&M.

The three-time SWAC Coach of The Year recently spoke with the Ruston Leader about his departure from the Louisiana HBCU for its SWAC neighbor.

“They’re doing some things when it comes to the resources they have and what they’re trying to build up. That’s the name of the game now. Kids want to be paid and it’s not as much about the other stuff like it was. The dynamic is changing,” Jackson told the paper. “That’s not to say GSU wasn’t willing to do it.”

When pressed, however, Jackson suggested Grambling State’s stance on NIL, revenue sharing, pay-for-play, etc. were all still unclear.

HBCU Alabama A&M University Donte' Jackson

“It was described to me that, ‘Oh, well we’re doing a study, and we’ll see what we can do,” Jackson said. “But to be honest, I don’t know what it looked like going forward. I never got an exact answer on how that would work. It was up in the air. Like I said, they were doing a study.”

Jackson coached at Grambling State for eight seasons after being hired by Dr. Paul Bryant — the same man who just hired him at Alabama A&M. He did go out of his way to try to quiet any rumors of bad blood between himself and his former boss, GSU AD Treyvean Scott.

“He helped me elevate the program to its highest point ever. I have no problem with him. He’s a good man,” Jackson said. “I felt like we worked well together. It was a tough decision to leave.”

HBCU coach proposes ‘buyout’ for big schools in portal https://hbcugameday.com/2025/04/03/hbcu-coach-proposes-buyout-for-big-schools-in-portal/ https://hbcugameday.com/2025/04/03/hbcu-coach-proposes-buyout-for-big-schools-in-portal/#respond Thu, 03 Apr 2025 17:14:16 +0000 https://hbcugameday.com/?p=142723 Grambling State head coach and former LSU assistant/Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph has an interesting proposal.

Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph has coached at the Power Five/Four level as well as at multiple HBCU programs.

Joseph, who just wrapped up his first season at the iconic HBCU football program, recently did an interview in which he talked about the transfer portal.

The former LSU assistant and Nebraska interim head coach knows that the best players in his program will always be pursued by bigger schools with better resources — and most of the time they will lose.

“We understand,” Joseph told local media. “I think the kids understand if they’re here and they’re sophomores and they have a big year and a Group of Five or Power Five approaches them and they have the finances to pull them out of there and I can’t match the finances — then you know what — they’re gonna go. That’s part of it. Coaches been doing it for years. So we shouldn’t get mad as coaches when these kids make decisions to take care of their family. I’m going to say it again — coaches’ been doing it for years.”

However Joseph says he believes there should be some compensation owed when his HBCU or other schools lose players to bigger schools.

“But I also think there needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go up to a Group of Five/Power Five, I should get kind of a compensation for that. So NCAA, if you’re listening to me — I need a buyout.”

Joseph isn’t the first HBCU coach to propose such an exchange. Last year Norfolk State men’s basketball head coach Robert Jones.

Robert Jones, Norfolk State, JUCO, HBCU

“Unpopular opinion: what if college players have buyouts like college coaches?” Jones posted on X last May. “Players/coaches should be able to go wherever they want BUT when a coach leave(s) he has to pay back a buyout clause usually. Well what about if a player leave(s) he pays a % of his new NIL deal? Hmmmm.”

So far, there have been no official proposal to the NCAA on behalf of smaller schools looking to get compensation when losing athletes to bigger schools. Could the HBCU world lead the way on that?

Let us know in the comments below.

GRAMBLING, La. | As part of its ongoing commitment to excellence and strategic growth, Grambling State University has partnered with College Sports Solutions (CSS) to conduct a comprehensive operational review of its intercollegiate athletics program.

The engagement, which officially began on March 17, 2025, is designed to position GSU Athletics for long-term success by evaluating current operations and identifying forward-looking strategies that align with the university’s mission, values, and future aspirations.

Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, expressed enthusiasm for the engagement and the opportunity it presents for GSU Athletics. “This is about elevating every aspect of the student-athlete experience while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our programs,” said Dr. Scott. “CSS understands the landscape of HBCU athletics and the competitive demands of today’s college sports environment. Their insights will be invaluable as we strive to build a model athletics program grounded in integrity, innovation, and impact.”

The timing of this engagement is especially critical. As the landscape of NCAA Division I athletics continues to evolve—with ongoing realignment, expanding media rights deals, and the emergence of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities—institutions like Grambling State must be proactive in evaluating how to remain competitive, compliant, and student-centered. This work will help ensure that GSU Athletics is well-positioned to thrive amid these rapidly shifting dynamics.

College Sports Solutions is a nationally respected consulting firm with extensive experience working with collegiate athletics programs, including several within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

President Martin Lemelle, Jr. emphasized the significance of this initiative in advancing the university’s vision for athletic and institutional distinction.

“Grambling State’s athletic legacy is iconic, and our future must be just as bold. Engaging College Sports Solutions is a decisive step in ensuring that our athletics program is built not just to compete—but to lead,” said Grambling State President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “We are building a culture of excellence on and off the field, and this engagement will help us chart a path that honors our past while preparing for a dynamic and competitive future.”

The review will assess key components of the athletics program, including organizational structure, financial operations, compliance, student-athlete welfare, facilities, and Title IX/gender equity. It will also include benchmarking against peer and aspirational institutions to inform strategic decision-making.

The final report from CSS will include actionable recommendations and will serve as a foundational tool in the university’s continued strategic planning for athletics. Grambling State University anticipates completing the engagement by June 30, 2025.

ATLANTA — Grambling State women’s basketball coach Courtney Simmons apologized for her behavior in GSU’s 57-47 loss to Jackson State on Thursday in the HBCU WBB quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament in Atlanta.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Simmons picked up her second technical foul with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter. After Tigers guard Kahia Warmsley missed a solid opportunity from beyond the arc. Jackson State claimed the defensive rebound with 15 seconds left in regulation. Immediately after JSU secured the ball, Simmons tossed her Expo dry-erase marker in the air, resulting in the second infraction and being removed from the game. Simmons notched her first technical foul in reference to a call made by an official on the court with 2:56 to play in the second quarter.

Simmons takes accountability

“It doesn’t matter how big the moment is,” Simmons said after the Tigers’ loss. “It doesn’t matter what the situation is. …I was wrong, and I take full responsibility. I embarrassed myself, I embarrassed my team, I embarrassed my AD [Dr. Trayvean Scott] and for that I am extremely sorry. But … I am a competitor, and that dog in me, you know, wanted that victory real bad. … But I tell my team all the time … your feelings can’t matter inside those four lines, and I allowed my feelings to dictate my actions. I take full responsibility.”

Simmons, who is in her second season at GSU (15-15, 12-6), guided the Tigers to the No. 5 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. With the loss to Jackson State, Grambling was eliminated from the tournament. Last season, Alcorn eliminated Grambling 61-59 in the semifinals of the league’s tournament.

Grambling entered the 2024-25 season as the top team in the SWAC’s preseason poll. However, GSU overcame a rocky start to the season in non-conference play. Losing to teams like California, Arizona, Oregon State, Tulsa, LSU, and Louisville all on the road. Before dropping six league contests. Including three at home against Bethune Cookman, JSU, and Southern — to claw its way to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Where does Grambling go from here?

With the transfer portal and NIL dominating HBCU hoops and the college athletics landscape as a whole, Simmons also found herself navigating 10 new players to the program, repeating the process of what she did in her first season leading the program. But to the Tigers’ coach, the transfer portal has become a normal practice that will not be removed anytime soon.

“I’m tired,” Simmons said. “I’d rather not have to sign 10 kids, potentially may have to sign eight or nine in this offseason. That’s the beauty of the transfer portal, right? … I’d like to have kids for more than one year, but in this league when so many of the kids are older and mature. You got to get those mature and seasoned kids to try to compete with the top half of the league. …That’s my goal, to always finish in the top half of the league. I finished fifth this year. … I take full responsibility for that. …I got to get some kids with a little bit more grit. We got to be able to grind those wins out. The SWAC is tough.”

While Grambling’s HBCU basketball season is over, Simmons plans to get back to the drawing board immediately in preparing her team to bounce back stronger in the 2025-26 campaign.

Previous Encounter: A Different Outcome

In their last meeting during the regular season, Southern University emerged victorious with a 71-64 win over Grambling State. That game was characterized by Southern’s defensive prowess and clutch shooting in the final minutes. However, the Tigers analyzed their previous shortcomings and adjusted their game plan accordingly for the tournament matchup.

Implications for the SWAC Tournament and HBCU Basketball

Southern University came into March as one of the elite programs in HBCU basketball. Its unexpected early exit from the tournament is sure to shake up the SWAC Tournament and open the door for other teams to vie for the championship.

As the tournament progresses, Grambling State’s momentum positions them as a formidable contender. Their ability to execute under pressure and adapt strategies based on previous encounters demonstrates a level of maturity and preparedness that could propel them further in the competition.

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama head football coach Major Applewhite has announced the hiring of Broderick Fobbs as the program’s new running backs coach. Fobbs was an HBCU football head coach at Grambling State University from 2014-2021.

No stranger to the Sun Belt Conference, Fobbs comes to South Alabama by way of ULM where he coached the Warhawks’ running backs in 2023 and 2024. Fobbs’ star pupil at ULM was running back Ahmad Hardy, who was named the 2024 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Hardy ranked 12th in the nation and first in the conference with 1,351 rushing yards, and his 13 rushing touchdowns were the most in the league.

Prior to his time in Monroe, Fobbs was the head coach at Grambling State for eight seasons. In 2017, Fobbs led Grambling State to an overall record of 11-2, ending the season with an appearance in the Celebration Bowl. The Tigers repeated as SWAC Champions, beating Alcorn State, 40-32, and enjoyed classic wins over Clark Atlanta, Prairie View A&M and rival Southern. The four-time SWAC Coach of the Year and three-time Fritz Pollard award winner led the Tigers to a final ranking of 14th in the FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll.

In 2016, Fobbs led the Tigers to an overall record of 12-1, ending the season as SWAC Champions, Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Champions and HBCU National Champions. After repeating as SWAC Western Division champions, winning the 2016 SWAC championship game and defeating North Carolina Central University 10-9 in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, the Tigers were recognized as one of the top teams in FCS football. Grambling finished the 2016 season on an 11-game winning streak, earning the program’s 25th SWAC title (the first since 2011) and 15th HBCU Football National title – its first since 2008. The Tigers finished the 2016 season ranked 15th in the final FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the final FCS STATS poll.

In his first three years as a head coach, Fobbs won three SWAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Tigers to a 25-2 regular-season conference record – including back-to-back undefeated conference regular seasons. In addition to being named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2016, Fobbs was also named the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, HERO Sports FCS Football Coach of the Year, BOXTOROW Co-Coach of the Year, 3x Fitz Pollard Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the FCS Eddie Robinson Award.

In 2014, Fobbs was named SWAC Coach of the Year, Louisiana Sports Writers Coach of the Year, Black College HOF Sports Writers Coach of the Year, and Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year and was named a FCS Eddie Robinson Award Finalist. The success continued into Fobbs’ second year at Grambling as he guided the team to an undefeated regular season conference record (9-0) – the first undefeated regular-season record by a SWAC school since Grambling finished 7-0 in 2008 – and a western division championship.

Before earning the head coaching job at Grambling, Fobbs was the tight ends coach at McNeese State in 2013 before working there as the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach from 2007 to 2011. Between stints with the Cowboys, Fobbs spent the 2012 campaign at Southern Miss as receivers coach.

Fobbs started his coaching career at Louisiana as a graduate assistant in 2000. He then earned his first full-time job at Northwestern State as a tight ends coach in 2003. Fobbs spent two seasons in that role before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2005. During his time at NSU, Fobbs completed an NFL Minority Internship with the Buffalo Bills.

Fobbs was a two-time team captain at Grambling, where he won the 1992 HBCU National Championship, defeating Florida A&M 45-15 in the Heritage Bowl. Grambling State was also a co-champion of the SWAC in 1994. He led the conference in yards per carry, averaging 7.1 yards/carry his senior year. He racked up more than 1,500 rushing yards during his college football career. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Grambling in 1997.

Fobbs is married to the former Kimbia Jones. The couple has two children, Kyndal and Rylee.

LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will present the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic between two storied HBCU football programs, Grambling State University and Jackson State University, on October 25, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium.

The landmark event will celebrate the rich legacy and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), showcasing one of college football’s most storied rivalries. The matchup will mark the 73rd all-time meeting between the two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) programs. Grambling earned a 41-20 victory in the last meeting on September 21, 2024.

“The Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium are proud to host the HBCU Classic, celebrating the rich legacy, talent, and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan. “The Raiders organization has a deep and long-standing connection to HBCU football that dates to the early years of the franchise under Al Davis and includes three Pro Football Hall of Famers from HBCU programs, the first Black quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, the first Black head coach in modern NFL history, and dozens of outstanding players, coaches, and administrators. We eagerly anticipate the pride and passion of HBCU football visiting Las Vegas in October.”

The first Las Vegas HBCU Classic will extend far beyond the Allegiant Stadium playing field, showcasing two of college football’s most celebrated marching bands: Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band and Jackson State’s internationally renowned “Sonic Boom of the South.”

“We are proud to welcome Grambling and Jackson State to Las Vegas in October for this historic HBCU matchup,” said Steve Hill, president and CEO of the LVCVA. “This game is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and community that resonates far beyond the field. We look forward to showcasing the excitement and hospitality Las Vegas has to offer to the teams, alumni, and fans.”

The contest marks Grambling’s second appearance in the “Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World,” following a 2002 matchup against Tennessee State at Sam Boyd Stadium. Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band also performed at halftime of a Raiders game during the 2021 season. Jackson State returns for its third visit after facing UNLV in 1975 and 2016. Las Vegas last hosted an HBCU football program on September 2, 2017, when Howard University shocked UNLV as a heavy underdog in one of college football’s most stunning upsets.

Presales for tickets and fan experience travel packages will go on sale on March 3, offering attendees exclusive opportunities to take in the game and the best of Las Vegas, and the public on sale will begin on March 7. For information on travel packages and tickets, visit allegiantstadium.com/lvhbcuclassic or @lvhbcuclassic on Instagram and X.

Broadcast details, kickoff time, and credential information will be announced at a later date.

Jackson State and Grambling State, — two of the biggest brands in HBCU football — will soon be meeting in Las Vegas.

The two teams are set to meet on Oct. 25 at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders according to a report by HBCU Sports.

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, announced a $350k sponsorship of the game.

“Fifty-five players from the Raiders have come from HBCUs. There are all kinds of alumni in our community,” Hill said via the Las Vegas Sun.“Anybody putting on an event that wants to bring a spotlight to them, when they choose Las Vegas, it is going to elevate that game.”

Grambling State, Jackson State, HBCU

The two programs are amongst the most storied in HBCU and FCS football. Both have four Pro Football Hall of Famers and have produced hundreds of NFL Draft picks.

However, the two programs are in different places heading into 2025. Grambling State failed to record a winning record for the fifth consecutive season in its first year under head coach Mickey Joseph.

Jackson State, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive 12-2 season under head coach TC Taylor. The program won its third SWAC title in four seasons and claimed the HBCU national title after winning the Celebration Bowl. However, Grambling State did hand Jackson State one of its losses in a non-conference matchup.

Trayvean D. Scott, Grambling State University’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics releases a letter announcing that the HBCU will be announcing the new Athletics Annual Fund, in light of the preliminary approval of the House v. NCAA case, paving the way for athletic departments to begin sharing revenue directly with student-athletes. Read his letter below.

Dear GramFam,

The landscape of intercollegiate athletics is transforming right before our eyes. The era of conference realignment, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), the transfer portal, and litigation challenges have led to a revolution across the collegiate athletics landscape. From the beginning, the staff and coaches of Grambling Athletics have demonstrated innovation and resilience in navigating these new and unchartered territories.

In October 2024, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken gave preliminary approval on the settlement in the House v. NCAA case, paving the way for athletic departments to begin sharing revenue directly with student-athletes. The calendar has transitioned to 2025, and we’re excited to transition NIL giving internally at GSU, a move made possible by the anticipated outcome of the House settlement.

As we continue to work to enhance the student-athlete experience at GSU, we will be announcing the new GSU Athletics Annual Fund, which will allow us to support TiGerNIL in a more profound way. The new annual fund will also be critical to funding scholarships and provide financial support to GSU Athletics for the future. Additional details will be coming soon, but if you are interested in learning how to support NIL opportunities for our student-athletes, please contact a member of our championship resources staff at 318.274.2374.

In addition to permitting revenue-sharing, the legal settlement would replace scholarship limits with roster caps. This will provide us with the opportunity to add scholarship support to several of our varsity programs. The settlement also provides back damages to student-athletes who competed from 2016-24, a total of nearly $2.8 billion.

While we support the proposed settlement and the new opportunities it provides for our student-athletes, it also creates significant financial challenges for our department. In all, we anticipate new expenses to reach roughly $300,000 annually for the next ten years, totaling $3 million over that timeframe.

Grambling State University Athletics has developed a comprehensive new strategy and structure not just to navigate this new collegiate landscape, but to thrive in it. While we will be evaluating targeted reductions in operating expenses, we know that we cannot grow our program by cuts. Our focus must continue to be on revenue growth to maintain competitive relevance in this new era, while preserving our storied history of winning championships.

The forthcoming transition to the new revenue-based model will provide a solid foundation for future growth. This past year, we unveiled The Courtside Tigers, a terrific new premium club overlooking the court in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center that provides a best-in-class member experience as well as new revenues for our department. We are also actively revitalizing our ticket sales & annual fund plans, investing in major gift fundraising, and exploring additional premium amenities in and around the athletics footprint.

Grambling

Moving forward, we will be asking you to continue and augment your support of Grambling State Athletics. To remain competitive, we will need to significantly grow our resources. To that end, I ask you to do the following:

1. Renew your season tickets, whether it’s for football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball or all four;
2. Renew your TiGer Club membership or consider upgrading your membership level;
3. Support forthcoming fundraising campaigns;
4. Recruit new fans and members to the GramFam

The recent success of Grambling State Athletics has been the result of dedicated administrators and coaches, outstanding student-athletes, and generous support from donors like you. We renovated and enhanced the GSU Soccer Complex. Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E Jones Park will see significant upgrades in the coming days by way of new field padding in and around the stadium. The GSU Softball complex received similar upgrades along with new netting for their facility, as well. The GSU football program will undergo their long-awaited locker room renovation to be completed this summer. We’ve also invested in new state-of-the-art video boards and sound systems at Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center and Eddie G. Robinson Stadium in conjunction with our partners at the Grambling University Foundation. And, as we look forward to the future of GSU athletics, fans and stakeholders can expect a facilities master plan that will position Grambling State Athletics for future success.

To continue the positive momentum forward, we will be asking you to continue supporting and elevating Grambling State Athletics, your contributions, ticket purchases and more, while we continue to emphasize our mission to educate, unite, inspire, and empower through athletics. Even more, we ask for your help in recruiting more investors and fans to the #Gramfam, as there is incredible strength in support in numbers.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey and for your unwavering commitment to GSU and our student-athletes. You absolutely make a difference in advancing our intercollegiate athletics program and helping position it as the best, most unique, in the nation. Best wishes to you and your family for a great 2025! I look forward to seeing you inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center as our men and women make a run for March Madness.

Go Tigers!

Decoldest Crawford, one of college football’s greatest names of all-time, is heading to an HBCU to reunite with his former coach Mickey Joseph.

The talented wide receiver is headed to Grambling State University. GSU is coached by Joseph, who recruited him to LSU when he committed there back in 2019. Crawford never played at LSU, however, as he ultimately flipped his commitment to Nebraska, where Joseph was on staff.

Decoldest Crawford, HBCU, Mickey Joseph

Mickey Joseph actually became the interim head coach at Nebraska that season after Scott Frost was fired, but Decoldest Crawford never played for him as he missed the entire 2022 season due to injury.

Crawford returned to Louisiana in 2023, joining Louisiana Tech, but caught just two passes for 17 yards as he mostly played on special teams. Both of his catches, ironically, came against Nebraska.

Joseph would sit out the 2023 season after being dismissed from Nebraska, but re-emerged as the head coach at Grambling State. Now the two are reunited as they will look to help GSU get back to championship form for the first time since 2017 when it won its most recent SWAC championship. That is the longest championship drought in school history for the proud HBCU program that has produced hundreds of NFL players and multiple Pro Football Hall of Famers. But it has never had a Decoldest Crawford, until now.

A little over a year after being fired from his HBCU job, Hue Jackson is set to take over a college football offense at Georgia State.

Jackson has reportedly been named offensive coordinator at GSU, according to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports. Jackson served as an analyst on the staff during the 2024 season after being fired as head coach at Grambling State.

Hue Jackson is best known for his stints as an NFL coach with the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders, but he does have an extensive college football background, including time at two HBCU football programs.

Jackson spent one season at Tennessee State, serving as offensive coordinator under rookie head coach Eddie George in 2021. He was hired as head coach at Grambling State in December of that year.

Jackson went 8-14 in two seasons as head coach at Grambling State University. He went 5-6 in 2023, concluding with a 27-22 loss to Southern University in the Bayou Classic.

He signed a five-year deal that paid him $400,000 per year in base salary. However, according to the school’s revenue and expense report, Jackson received total compensation of $783,585 in 2022 thanks to a clause that entitled him to 25 percent of of any new monies he brought into the university through promotions, sponsorships or other initiatives according to a report by Sportico. He was fired by Grambling State following the 2023 season.

Now Jackson will be back in the booth as an offensive coordinator for Georgia State.

Czavian “Zae” Teasett, one of the most promising quarterbacks in HBCU football, has announced his transfer from Southern University to Grambling State University. This high-profile move adds fuel to the already intense SWAC rivalry between the two storied programs and positions Grambling for a potential resurgence in the 2025 season with a veteran signal caller.

Teasett, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, made a significant impact during the 2024 season with Southern. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Teasett completed 71 of 129 passes for 941 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the ground, he added 217 rushing yards and one touchdown on 39 carries. His impressive early-season performances earned him the title of SWAC Player of the Week in Week 2 and an Honorable Mention for the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week in September.

Despite his achievements, Teasett’s time at Southern took a turn late in the season when the coaching staff shifted their focus to freshman quarterback Jalen Woods. Woods led the Jaguars to a 24-14 victory over Grambling in the 51st Annual Bayou Classic, a hallmark event in HBCU and SWAC football. Following this, Teasett entered the NCAA transfer portal in December, seeking a fresh start.

A Rivalry Rekindled in the SWAC

The move to Grambling State not only gives Teasett a chance to showcase his skills in a new environment but also heightens the stakes in the legendary Southern-Grambling rivalry. Southern dominated the SWAC West in 2024 with a 7-1 conference record and emerged as one of the top programs in HBCU football. Grambling, on the other hand, struggled with a 2-6 conference record, underscoring the need for a game-changer like Teasett.

Coach Mickey Joseph at Grambling is rebuilding the Grambling State University program, and Teasett’s arrival could be a cornerstone for their future success. His ability to make plays with both his arm and legs aligns well with the Tigers’ need for a dynamic leader on offense.

HBCU Football Landscape Shifting

Teasett’s transfer highlights the growing competition within HBCU football and the SWAC conference. The transfer portal has become a pivotal tool for programs to bolster their rosters and compete at the highest level of HBCU athletics. For Grambling, landing Teasett signals their intent to return to the top tier of the SWAC.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Bayou Classic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games in HBCU football. With Teasett now wearing the black and gold of Grambling, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown against his former team.

Teasett’s journey is more than a personal comeback—it’s a reminder of the excitement, talent, and passion that define HBCU football and the SWAC. His transfer is poised to make waves in the conference and elevate one of the greatest rivalries in college sports to new heights.

Yet another HBCU star is headed to the SEC ranks — this time to the University of South Carolina.

Former Grambling State linebacker Andrew Jones told On3Sports that he has committed to the SEC squad.

A four-star prospect out of high school, Jones came to the Louisiana-based HBCU from the University of Memphis. He played in four games as a freshman in 2021 before being redshirted. He appeared in 10 games the following season, totaling four tackles and a sack — all coming against Mississippi State.

He then transferred to Grambling State where he saw action in just two games during the 2023 season.

Jones, a native of Marrero, La., had a sensational season for Grambling State, tallying 122.0 total tackles (57 solo), 20.5 tackles of loss, 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one defensive touchdown. He was named the league’s co-Defensive Player of The Year.

HBCU, Andrew Jones, Grambling State, SEC, South Carolina
Andrew Jones had a big year in the SWAC after starting his career at the University of Memphis.

His total tackles ranked him first in the SWAC and sixth nationally, while his tackles for were tied for second in the SWAC and fourth in FCS.

Jones registered double-digit tackles in 10 of GSU’s 12 games, including logging a season-high 15 tackles on Nov. 14 versus Alabama A&M.

South Carolina has picked up a breakout player from an HBCU before. The SEC squad landed former South Carolina State running back Jawarn Howell, who was a freshman All-American with the MEAC squad. He played in just four games in 2024, rushing for 92 yards on 14 carries and one score, but announced he will be back after getting an NIL deal.

Grambling State head coach Courtney Simmons did not mince words following the HBCU squad’s crushing 46-point loss to LSU. The game was a stark reminder of the financial and competitive disparities HBCUs face when taking on Power Four teams in so-called “money games.” For Simmons, the experience illuminated a critical issue: the cost of survival versus the toll on her players’ morale.

“You have to be careful with playing this many Power Five games,” Simmons stated. “There’s a thing called confidence, right? And losses like this can kill kids’ confidence. Nothing about this prepares you for SWAC play.”

Her candid remarks underscore the unique challenges HBCU programs encounter as they balance financial obligations with their athletes’ mental and physical well-being.

Grambling State, who shot just 29.4% from the field compared to LSU’s 48.7%, struggled to keep pace. Grambling State was outscored 58-28 in the paint and 31-7 in second-chance points. Despite these numbers, Simmons explained that the program’s financial realities leave little choice but to accept these lopsided matchups.

“These are money games. We play these games to get the money so we can survive, and in our league, that is it. That is all,” Simmons revealed. “I would rather not ever play LSU again, but they pay us good money to come here and take a loss.”

For Simmons, the financial necessity clashes with her competitive instincts and long-term goals for her team. “I played high-level basketball. I played at the University of Louisville. I know what major basketball looks like,” she said. “Nothing about getting the snot beat out of us helps us for league play.”

The coach also pointed out the differing approaches to non-conference scheduling among SWAC programs, including rival Southern. “I’m not as experienced as Carlos Funchess, down there at Southern. They are going to schedule ten of their 11 non-conference games against Power Five teams and go get $40,000 apiece,” she said. “But their kids are used to that. I’m the only team in the league that didn’t go get other SWAC players. And so for my kids, a majority of them came from the Sun Belt…”

Simmons’ comments highlight the broader struggles HBCUs face when competing on uneven playing fields. While games against Power Four teams bring significant financial benefits, they often come at the expense of player development and confidence. As Simmons put it, “It sounds good to say, but nothing about this prepares you for SWAC play.”

Conversely, her Grambling State team has a 131-30 win over Division III Cenetary earlier this year.

The loss to LSU is just one example of the challenges HBCU teams confront. While LSU’s star Aneesah Morrow dominated with 26 points and 16 rebounds, Simmons focused on ensuring her team does not carry the weight of these losses into conference play. “Right now, it’s just a matter of not killing their confidence so that we are prepared for SWAC play and don’t lose our first two games in the league.”

For Simmons, the takeaway is clear: “Nobody is going to sit at a press conference and tell you these were moral victories. That’s not real life.”

Her unfiltered perspective serves as a rallying cry for greater investment in HBCU sports programs to reduce reliance on these difficult matchups and create more equitable opportunities for their athletes.

Grambling State University, a prominent HBCU, is gearing up to face the Florida Gators after nearly pulling off an upset against another SEC powerhouse, Ole Miss, last week. GSU showcased their potential by leading 33-25 at halftime against the No. 24 squad, eventually falling just short with a 66-64 loss. This performance has set the stage for an exciting matchup as Grambling State aims to make a statement against another SEC opponent.

In their recent encounter with Ole Miss, Grambling State’s key players delivered impressive performances. Senior guard Kintavious Dozier led the team with 15 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Ernest Ross contributed 12.5 points and 7 rebounds. Mikale Stevenson added 13.5 points and 3.5 assists, demonstrating the depth of talent within the HBCU’s roster. The Tigers’ defense was formidable, holding the Rebels to a .305 field-goal percentage and outrebounding them 39-33, a notable feat against an SEC team.

As they prepare to face the Gators, the Tigers are focused on refining their strategies to capitalize on the Gators’ weaknesses.

Florida, currently 2-0, has shown vulnerabilities despite their victories. UF has struggled with rebounding, being stalemated on the glass overall and at a deficit on the offensive end. Grambling State, having out-rebounded Ole Miss, sees this as an opportunity to leverage their strengths.

Florida,

The upcoming game is more than just another matchup; it’s a chance for an HBCU to shine on a national stage against a prestigious SEC program. Grambling State is the reigning SWAC men’s basketball champion and won its first NCAA Tournament game in the spring.

Grambling State, HBCU

Florida’s lineup features standout players like guard Walter Clayton Jr., averaging 19 points per game, and forward Alex Condon, who boasts an impressive 92.3% field-goal percentage. The Gators will look to improve their rebounding and three-point shooting against the Tigers. However, with Grambling State’s confidence and proven ability to challenge SEC teams, the Gators cannot afford to underestimate this HBCU opponent.

The clash between Grambling State and Florida promises to be an exciting contest, highlighting the competitive spirit of an HBCU taking on an SEC giant. As the Tigers aim to secure a landmark victory, fans can expect a thrilling game that underscores the depth and talent present across college basketball’s diverse landscape.

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State women’s basketball team turned in a performance for the ages on Tuesday night, demolishing Centenary 131-30 at Willis Reed Court inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. The Lady Tigers exploded out of the gates with fast-paced, full-court pressure that left Centenary scrambling all game long. The win marked one of the most dominant performances in recent memory for Grambling State.

Kahia Warmsley finished as the game’s leading scorer with 24 points, while Arianna Mosley added 18 and Douthsine Prien contributed 17. Lydia Freeman had a standout performance, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Tigers’ offense was unstoppable, and their defense was equally relentless, forcing turnovers and converting them into points.

The game began with both teams exchanging quick baskets, but Grambling State wasted no time asserting control. Kaia Warmsley got things started for the Lady Tigers with a smooth mid-range jumper, setting the tone for the night. Solid backcourt defense from GSU led to an and-one layup from Douthsine Prien, sparking a defensive and offensive blitz that left Centenary overwhelmed.

Grambling’s defense forced 20 turnovers in the first half alone, while the Lady Tigers turned the ball over just twice.

The first quarter was nothing short of spectacular, as the Lady Tigers unleashed a 41-0 run. Grambling State shot a scorching 72% from the field (21-29), leaving Centenary with no answer defensively. The Tigers led 51-6 after the opening period, showcasing their intensity on both ends of the floor.

In the second quarter, Grambling State’s high-pressure defense continued to stifle Centenary, leading to more turnovers and easy fast-break opportunities. GSU went on another devastating run, this time a 40-3 surge that put the game well out of reach.

The Lady Tigers shot 14-24 in the second quarter, maintaining their offensive efficiency while holding Centenary to just three points. At halftime, Grambling State held a commanding 91-9 lead, with three players already in double figures.

After the break, Grambling State eased off the full-court press but showed no signs of slowing down. The Tigers continued to build their lead, reaching 100 points with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. GSU outscored Centenary 22-11 in the third period, pushing the score to 113-20 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Grambling State cruised to a 131-30 victory, with the team showing remarkable depth and efficiency. The 131 points marked the most scored by the Lady Tigers since January 2, 2024, when they posted 159 points against the College of Biblical Studies.

The win was a complete team effort, with the Tigers dominating both offensively and defensively from start to finish.

Grambling State University (GSU), a storied HBCU with a rich athletic tradition, stormed onto the court in their season opener, delivering a jaw-dropping first-half performance.

GSU’s women’s basketball team scored an astounding 91 points by halftime against Centenary College on November 4, 2024, demonstrating their offensive prowess and setting the tone for the season.

GSU, known for its competitive spirit and legacy as an HBCU powerhouse, showcased incredible shooting accuracy and tenacity, particularly in the first two quarters. They scored 51 points in the first quarter alone, followed by another 40 in the second, placing Centenary far behind and underlining GSU’s dominance.

Grambling State University, HBCU

Standouts included Kahia Warmsley, who went an impressive 9-for-9 from the field, along with sharpshooter Douthsine Prien, both key players in this historic first-half offensive surge. Warmsley had 22 points — more than doubling Centenary College’s total — while Prien had 15 points.

The Lady Tigers’ aggressive defense and swift ball movement forced Centenary into numerous turnovers, which GSU quickly converted into points. By halftime, they led with a stunning margin, reflecting both their offensive efficiency and defensive pressure.

This isn’t the first time the HBCU squad has put up huge numbers. Last fall, Grambling State University beat the College of Biblical Studies 159-18 in a non-conference matchup. We’ll have to see what the final score of this one will be.

WACO, Texas – Legendary former HBCU football star from Grambling State and Super Bowl winning head coach Doug Williams, has been selected as the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) recipient of the 2024 Trailblazer Award. The award will be presented to Williams during the 2025 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Williams is one of the most storied G-Men in the history of the program, playing quarterback under the great Eddie Robinson. As a four-year HBCU football starter, Williams led the Tigers to 36-7 record, winning three SWAC championships from 1974-1977. He was also named the Black College Football Player of the Year twice.

His stellar play helped him become a Heisman candidate, finishing fourth in the voting following the 1977 campaign.

Williams was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 17th pick of the first round of the 1978 NFL Draft, becoming the first African American quarterback to be drafted in the opening round. He led the Buccaneers to the playoffs three times in the first five seasons, including a trip to the 1979 NFC Championship Game.

The Zachary, La. native reached the zenith of his career when he led Washington to a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII, becoming the first Black quarterback to be named Super Bowl MVP. He set records for most touchdown passes (four), most passing yards (340), longest pass completion (80 yards) and longest touchdown pass (80 yards).

In 1995, Doug Williams was the offensive coordinator for the Scottish Claymores in the World League, then became a college scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars for two seasons. Following his stint with Jaguars, he served as head of Morehouse for the 1997 season.

In 1998, upon the retirement of Robinson as the head coach of GSU, Williams was named the new leader of Grambling State football. He won his first SWAC title as head coach in 2000, with a 10-2 overall record. The following year he led the Tigers to Black College Football National Title with a 10-1 record. He completed a SWAC championship three-peat in 2002, leading the G-Men to an 11-2 mark.

HBCU Grambling State Doug Williams

Following the 2003 season, which saw GSU claim a SWAC Western Division crown, he returned to the NFL to serve as an executive with Tampa Bay. After serving as general manager of the Virginia Destroyers in the United Football League during the 2010 season, Williams returned to HBCU football as head coach of Grambling State, immediately winning his fourth SWAC title as head coach in 2011.

Since 2014, he’s served as an executive for the Washington Commanders

Doug Williams is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, the Black College Football Hall of Fame, the Grambling Legends Hall of Fame, the SWAC Hall of Fame, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor, the Tampa Stadium Krewe of Honor, and the Washington Commanders Ring of Honor.

In 2009, Harris and Williams collaborated to create the Black College Football Hall of Fame to preserve the history and honor the greatest football players, coaches and contributors from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

The AFCA Trailblazer Award was created to honor leaders in the football coaching profession who coached at HBCU institutions. Past Trailblazer Award winners include Charles Williams, Hampton (2004); Cleve Abbott, Tuskegee (2005); Arnett Mumford, Southern (2006); Billy Nicks, Prairie View A&M (2007); Alonzo “Jake” Gaither, Florida A&M (2008); Fred “Pops” Long, Wiley (2009); Harry R. “Big Jeff” Jefferson, Bluefield State (2010); Edward P. Grambling State University head coach Mickey Joseph said he’d be willing to pay a fine for criticizing officials and the SWAC is holding him to that.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has publicly reprimanded and levied a fine of $5,000 to Grambling State University head football coach Mickey Joseph for his comments related to officiating.

The comments were made during a weekly head coaches media session on Monday following Grambling State University’s football contest with Texas Southern University on Saturday, October 26.

Mickey Joseph, SWAC

When asked about his team’s 24-17 loss to Texas Southern University on Saturday, Joseph had this to say:

“I think it’s some bullshit calls…,” Joseph said on the Monday morning call.

Joseph went on to say that the officiating has been a consistent issue in his eyes, and that he was ready to deal with the consequences — including a potential fine.

“I know they’re going to shoot me a fine — you know — got the money to pay it,” Joseph said matter-of-factly.

Joseph’s comments were made in violation of Section II, Article 12, Item I (Causes for Imposition of a Penalty) of the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws, and Sports Regulations, according to the SWAC’s statement on Monday afternoon.

Future violations of the Conference’s Code of Ethics will result in additional penalties for Joseph including an increased fine amount along with a one-game suspension for the Grambling State University head coach according to the conference.

HBCU football has had its share of criticisms in terms of referring, but Grambling State University head coach Mickey Joseph didn’t mince words about it on Monday.

During the weekly SWAC football coaches conference call, Joseph was blunt in his criticism of the officiating his team has received.

“I think it’s some bullshit calls…,” Joseph said on the Monday morning call.

Grambling State is coming off a 24-17 loss to Texas Southern University — its third loss in its last four games. Joseph is clearly frustrated, stating on the call that he was trying to keep his composure.

“So they can take it the way they want to take it. They can fine me, they can do what they want. It’s some bullshit calls,” Joseph said.

Joseph went on to say that the officiating has been a consistent issue in his eyes. And he’s ready to deal with the consequences — including a potential fine.

“I know they’re going to shoot me a fine — you know — got the money to pay it,” Joseph said matter-of-factly.

Joseph is currently 4-4 in his first season at the storied HBCU football program. He was hired to take over following the dismissal of Hue Jackson following the 2023 season. Prior to coming to Grambling State University he was interim head coach at Nebraska, and an assistant at LSU.

Among them is a legendary HBCU duo.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced that it has trimmed its list of 2025 candidates in the Contributor category from 47 to 25. Two Grambling State and HBCU legends are still in the mix: former Tiger head coach Eddie Robinson and his quarterback Doug Williams have both made the cut. Below is a press release courtesy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame explaining the process and the next steps for these HBCU greats on their path to Canton.

Canton, OH – Twenty-five candidates in the Contributor category have moved one step closer to election for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025 presented by Visual Edge IT.

The Hall’s Contributor Blue-Ribbon Committee trimmed an original list of 47 nominees to these 25 individuals: K.S. “Bud” Adams, Roone Arledge, Chris Berman, Howard Cosell, Otho Davis, John Facenda, Mike Giddings, Ralph Hay, Frank “Bucko” Kilroy, Don Klosterman, Eddie Kotal, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Rich McKay, John McVay, Art Modell, Lee Remmel, Eddie Robinson, Art Rooney Jr., Jerry Seeman, Seymour Siwoff, Amy Trask, Jim Tunney, Doug Williams and John Wooten.

Hall of Fame bylaws stipulate that Committee members vote for 20 individuals at this stage of the selection process, but the bylaws also allow for additional candidates to proceed in the case of any tie votes for the 20th position.

Each Contributor Blue-Ribbon Committee member will cast an additional ballot later this month to reduce the list further — this time to nine (9) semifinalists. Results will be announced in about two weeks.

Earlier this year, the Hall of Fame revised its bylaws beginning with the Class of 2025. Among the changes: a split of the Coach/Contributor category, which had been combined over the past few election cycles. Both categories now will send nominees through respective Blue-Ribbon Committees before candidates are considered by the full Selection Committee. The Blue-Ribbon Committees are comprised of nine (9) individuals: seven (7) who also are members of the full Selection Committee and two (2) others who hold full voting rights for this subcommittee only.

Through a sequence of reduction votes over several weeks, the Blue-Ribbon Committee will select one (1) Finalist for the Class of 2025. There is no waiting period (mandatory retirement) for Contributor candidates to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

GRAMBLING, La. – Alcorn State’s Noah Kiani’s game-winning 27-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter was enough to hand Grambling State a 17-15 loss at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a SWAC west division HBCU football showdown.

ASU stretched its advantage to 14-6 when quarterback Xzavier Vaughn found Stemarion Edwards for a 75-yard score with 9:32 remaining until halftime.

Grambling State pulled within two points of Alcorn State with 38 seconds left in the third quarter when Talbert capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive with a 3-yard run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, making it a 14-12 game.

Harradine gave GSU its only lead of the game when he drilled a 44-yard field goal with 10:53 to go in the HBCU football contest.

Alcorn State starting quarterback Xzavier Vaughn was 10-for-18 for 149 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jacorian Sewell ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in the crucial SWAC contest.

The game was evenly matched during regulation, with Grambling tying it 24-24 in the final minute on a touchdown pass from Myles Crawley to Jalen Johnson. With regulation unable to settle the game, the HBCU battle moved into overtime, where both teams showcased resilience.

In the first overtime, Grambling struck first with a 16-yard touchdown run by Darnell Talbert, but Prairie View responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Johnson to Shemar Savage, keeping the game tied. Both teams exchanged field goals in the second overtime, pushing the game into a third extra period.

Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels threw his first NFL touchdown pass to a former HBCU star Trent Scott.

Scott, a Commanders offensive lineman, caught a touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels on Monday night.

The pass came in the third quarter for the Washington Commanders, giving it a two-score lead. Scott, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., celebrated the score with his frat’s signature “throwing the hooks.”

Trent Scott, Washington Commanders,

Trent Scott is a versatile offensive lineman who emerged from Grambling State University and has carved out a solid career in the NFL. After going undrafted in 2018, Scott signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he started multiple games across the offensive line, showcasing his adaptability at both tackle and guard. His steady performance earned him stints with the Carolina Panthers, where he became a key part of their offensive line.

During his time with Carolina, Scott proved his worth by stepping into the starting lineup, including a notable stretch in 2021 where he helped the Panthers protect quarterbacks P.J. Walker and Cam Newton in crucial games. Known for his resilience and consistency, Scott has played nearly every snap in many games, contributing to both the run game and pass protection.

Scott signed with the Washington Commanders prior to the 2023 season, and is now a part of a rebuilding job that includes protecting Daniels.

His journey from an HBCU to the NFL demonstrates his determination and skill, particularly as he continues to secure roles as a reliable lineman for various teams. His path serves as inspiration for many HBCU players aiming for a professional career.

Grambling State University delivered a dominant performance in a matchup of HBCU football powers, defeating Jackson State 41-20 on Saturday in Grambling, LA.

However, the game will NOT count in the SWAC standings. The game was a non-SWAC contest between the two traditional HBCU powers in separate divisions of the same league.

Grambling State set the tone early with two first-quarter touchdowns, including a 7-yard run by Ke’Travion Hargrove and a 22-yard pass from Myles Crawley to J.R. Waters. HBCU football fans witnessed Jackson State rally in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 14-13, thanks to a 70-yard touchdown pass and a 33-yard run.

HBCU, Grambling State

However, Grambling’s defense took control as Caleb Lee-Collins intercepted a pass and returned it for a 22-yard touchdown just before halftime, shifting momentum back in their favor. In the second half, Grambling State’s defense forced three turnovers, including a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Patrick Marshall. Stars like Hargrove shone, adding another rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Grambling State’s victory was ultimately powered by its defense, which held Jackson State to just 159 yards rushing while forcing four fumbles.

This win improves GSU’s record to 3-1, as it continues to assert itself as a top contender in SWAC football. The ability to capitalize on Jackson State’s mistakes and control the clock was key, as it dominated possession with nearly 35 minutes of offensive time. Grambling State’s performance left no doubt that they are a force to be reckoned with in HBCU competition.

Former LSU running back Tre Bradford is headed to Grambling State to be reunited with one of the coaches on the staff at his former SEC school.

Bradford is reportedly preparing the suit up for Grambling State’s season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, according to the Ruston Leader. He will make his GSU debut the same day as new head coach Mickey Joseph, who was on the LSU staff when he joined the program.

Tre Bradford had an impressive high school career at Lancaster High School in Texas. He was a highly rated running back, ranked as a four-star prospect by multiple recruiting services. Bradford rushed for over 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior, helping his team to an 11-2 record and a district championship. His performance earned him All-District honors and recognition as one of the top running backs in Texas.

Grambling State, Tre Bradford

Tre Bradford began his college football career at LSU in 2020, where he appeared in five games, including one start, and recorded his first career touchdown against Florida. After a brief stint at Oklahoma, he returned to LSU in 2022. In total, Bradford played in seven games for LSU, with two starts, and accumulated 70 rushing yards on 16 carries. His career highlight was a 55-yard reception against Florida State in 2023. Bradford entered the transfer portal in December 2023, seeking new opportunities.

He has found that opportunity at Grambling State, where he’ll get the chance to do so at another legendary program.

The sun shined brilliantly overhead as Grambling State ushered in the dawn of a new age and era with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the institution’s new Digital Library and Learning Commons, the first for an HBCU in the state of Louisiana.

A space to connect, create, and collaborate. The state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot facility is designed to support all aspects of learning. With more than 150 computer stations, 17,000 square feet of study space, and multipurpose space for events, meetings, and seminars, it is the ultimate intersection of academics, curiosity, and community.

Thursday’s celebration was a historic moment for GSU, which saw the opening of the old A.C. Lewis Memorial Library in 1962, with an addition built in 1986.

But over the years, time took its toll on the old GSU library, and looking toward the future, in 2017, then President Rick Gallot began a digital library project to replace the existing facility. With the support of alumni, faculty, and students, the project gained funding and commitments, and in 2019, construction began on the first digital library at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

The journey toward the $16.6M library’s opening eventually became an arduous one due to circumstances beyond the university’s control. But perseverance and persistence finally paid off, leading up to Thursday’s official unveiling of GSU’s new doorway to the future.

Gallot, now President/CEO of the University of Louisiana System (ULS), was on hand for the grand opening celebration.

“The ribbon cutting of the GSU Digital Library and Learning Commons marks a transformational moment for Grambling State University, the University of Louisiana System, and the global landscape of academia,” Gallot said. “This modern marvel provides GSU scholars with a digital learning environment that rivals–and indeed, exceeds–the offerings of many world-renowned and well-resourced institutions.

“It equips our esteemed faculty and staff with immediate connectivity to a vast repository of digital resources and pedagogical tools. This milestone is a testament to the audacious spirit of Grambling State University, where no vision is too big, or too bold.”

Current Grambling State President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. was Executive Vice President when planning and groundbreaking for the Digital Library and Learning Commons was being done. He called Thursday’s grand opening a journey of determination and resilience.

“We fought for this project because we know it’s important and we fight for Dear Ole Grambling because we believe in the boundless potential of every student who walks through our doors,” Lemelle said.

“So yes, we are building, and we are fighting. We’re building a future where every student can excel, and we are fighting to ensure that Grambling remains a beacon of hope, resilience and excellence. We’re building a bridge between the past and the future, and we are fighting to keep the legacy of our flame burning bright.”

Lemelle said the HBCU Digital Library and Learning Commons will be a place where ideas are born, and boundaries are broken.

“It will be where we light the torch of victory,” Lemelle said. “Victory in learning. Victory in innovation. And victory in community. It is here that we will fight for Dear Ole Grambling, and in this fight we will arm ourselves with the knowledge, perseverance, and the unyielding spirit that defines us.

“So, as we stand here today, let us remember what we set out to do – let us tell them we are building, not just structures, but the future. Let us tell them we’re building not just spaces but legacies. And as we continue to build, let us also fight – fight for the dreams of our students, fight for the excellence of our university, and yes, fight for Dear Ole Grambling for we are the pride of the USA and there is no doubt that we will win today, tomorrow and always.”

Dean of GSU’s Digital Library and Learning Commons Adrienne Webber said the new facility will propel the HBCU and its students into a bigger and brighter future than ever before.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen with this program – we’re going to have a ‘Maker’s Space’ because our students think differently than I did when I would go to class, learn something, graduate, and do what I learned. These students today are a little different. When they think about it, they dream about it, they write about it, they draw about it and then they want to put it together and see what will happen.

“So, we need to have things like 3-D imaging and 3-D printers because they can change the world. Students at another institution designed a straw that filters water and that was later purchased by Walmart. … That can happen right here at Grambling State University because this library will have the tools that the students will use to do that.”

Webber said plans are for the library to include laser and etching machines, a Cricut maker, a soldering station, a hot wire cutter and plastic vending machines among other tools.

“If you think it, you can make it,” Webber said. “And then we’re going to be able to find out if an idea is an original or if someone has it already. We’re hoping to become a patent and trade resource center. These students are so creative. Their audio, video, and AI skills are tremendous and we’re going to provide them with the tools to build on those skills.

Grambling State HBCU Digital Library

“We’re going to have a digital repository, so when our students write, they can also take that and have it published. We’re going to change how people view our students. From poetry to something scientific, whatever is in the repository will be transferred to those areas. The students will not have a reason not to learn more and do more.”

Others speaking during the grand opening ceremony included Student Government Association President Morgan Patton, Miss Grambling State University Jess’Lyn Sanders, city of Grambling Mayor Alvin Bradley, ULS Board Chair Mark Romero, and Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Kim Hunter.

“It took too long for us to get here, but we are mighty glad that we are here today,” Hunter said. “To open this amazing and historic digital library for the students of Grambling State University was important because a dream deferred is not a dream denied.”

Hunter, whose parents graduated from GSU, said the Digital Library and Learning Commons is not her parents’ HBCU library.

“There’s no Dewey Decimal system, no card catalog, and no dusty books for miles to go,” Hunter said. “And no sweet librarians shushing you when you’re making too much noise. But a library is still the heartbeat of every campus, a place where students grow, gather, and collaborate. And this one is special because education today is about research, innovation, and technology around amazing online databases, AI, and information beyond that as well.

“That’s what makes today special. We are moving into the future with this amazing facility, and we know great things will happen inside of it. And it’s the first for an HBCU and the first for the state of Louisiana. So, as I look at this facility, I would say it is beautiful. It is historic. It is an amazing nod to Grambling’s past, and it is an exclamation point on Grambling’s future.”

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University’s James “Shack” Harris & Doug Williams Field at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium and Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center will be receiving visual upgrades and enhancements prior to the 2024-25 season with the installation of new digital scoreboards and sound systems.

“On behalf of Grambling State Athletics, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to President Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr., VP Brandon A. Logan, and Grambling University Foundation Board Chairwoman Dr. Janet Barnes for their unwavering support in bringing our stadium digital signage project to life,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Trayvean D. Scott.” “Their dedication and commitment continue to elevate GSU Athletics, and for that, we are truly grateful.”

“The transformative scoreboard and technology upgrades goes beyond enhancing our athletic facilities–it reaffirms our commitment to creating a premier experience for our entire community,” said Brandon A. Logan, Vice President for University Advancement & Innovation. “Central to this upgrade is the thoughtful repurposing of the boards inside the Hobdy Assembly Center, which will now serve to elevate the visitor experience. By strategically reallocating these resources, we are not just improving our infrastructure, but also enriching the way our story is told to everyone who steps onto our campus. This initiative symbolizes our dedication to honoring our legacy while investing in a future where every visit to Grambling State leaves a lasting impact.”

Robinson Memorial Stadium will be increasing its overall video screen size by approximately 140 square feet to a new 25′ tall by 47′ wide 10mm high resolution and high brightness outdoor display. GSU will also be treating fans to a brand-new stadium sound system which will provide more overall coverage but with a more superior range of sound.

The Hobdy Assembly Center will also be getting a major visual overhaul in the main arena, lobby, and concourse areas. The biggest addition will be the new center-hung structure with four large 10’x23′ high resolution 3.9mm indoor video screens providing fans with live video and real-time statistical information.

Two additional large 10’x18′ screens will be mounted on each back wall to enhance the game experience but also heighten the visual exposure for non-athletic events such as concerts and graduation ceremonies.

The arena will also get all new traditional scoreboards throughout the venue. The main lobby will welcome fans with a new high-resolution 7’x12′ video screen.

The digital scoreboards will afford additional opportunities for Grambling State Athletics to increase corporate sponsorship opportunities and continue to enhance the GSU brand.

“The new digital board represents a significant leap forward in our efforts to monetize and enhance the visibility of the Grambling State brand. This investment not only promises to generate revenue for our athletics program but also elevates the entire university, reinforcing our legacy and expanding our reach within the broader community,” said Scott.

Two HBCU players, one from the SWAC and another from the MEAC, are up for FCS Football’s top award.

Grambling State University quarterback Myles Crawley and Howard University running back Jarett Hunter have both been named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Payton Award – given to the top player in FCS football.

Myles Crawley has achieved significant milestones.

He was named the 2024 SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year earlier this month, reflecting his talent and hard work. In the previous season, Crawley threw for 2,303 yards and 16 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the top HBCU quarterbacks. His performances this season include a notable game against Hampton, where he completed 25-of-38 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Crawley continues to lead Grambling with impressive stats and leadership.

Grambling State quarterback Myles Crawley looks to have a big season in 2024.

Jarett Hunter, the running back for Howard University, has had a significant impact on the team’s performance. Before joining Howard, Hunter played high school football, where he showcased his skills and potential. His impressive high school career laid the foundation for his success at the collegiate level.

At Howard University, Hunter has been a key player, contributing to the team’s offensive success. For example, in a crucial game against North Carolina Central, Hunter, along with Eden James, combined for 197 rushing yards and three touchdowns, helping Howard secure a decisive 50-20 victory. This win played a vital role in Howard’s push for the MEAC title and a spot in the Celebration Bowl.

Hunter’s consistent performance and ability to break through defenses have made him a standout player on the team. His contributions have been instrumental in several key victories for Howard, reinforcing his importance to the Bison’s offense.

Both players face an uphill battle to claim the award, however. Alcorn State’s Steve McNair was the last HBCU player to win the award, named after former Jackson State star Walter Payton.

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State athletics remembers and mourns the passing of former Grambling/HBCU women’s basketball star, Jazmin Boyd.

Boyd, a member of the Grambling State women’s basketball team from 2015 to 2019, was one of the best women’s basketball players ever to step foot on the historic HBCU campus. Her accomplishments included being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Freshman of the Year in 2016. She followed up that stellar season by earning All-SWAC honors once again in 2017.

In 2018, she helped lead the Lady Tigers win the SWAC Tournament and secure a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades. Boyd also scored over 1,000 points during her collegiate career.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our former women’s basketball student-athlete and GSU alumna, Jazmin Boyd,” said Grambling State Vice President for Athletics Dr. Trayvean Scott. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, teammates and all who were touched by her remarkable life.” We ask for everyone to keep the Boyd family in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

“It’s so tragic, we are all in shock,” Scott told KNOE News in Monroe, Louisiana. “We are all feeling it right now.” “Our hearts and minds are with her family… from Grambling all the way to Hattiesburg, Mississippi,” added Scott.

“I got the call last night, and I was very saddened to hear it was her. Jaz was great-spirited, a great competitor, and overall a great person,” expressed her former coach, Freddie Murray.

Boyd’s outstanding performance was highlighted in 2019 when she was honored after the Lady Tigers’ victory over Alcorn State.

Her cause of death has not been officially disclosed but HBCU Sports has reported that sources told them that Boyd passed away in a car accident near Ruston, Louisiana.

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Grambling State University quarterback Myles Crawley was named the 2024 SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. This prestigious honor, announced at the annual media day in Birmingham, Alabama, recognizes Crawley’s exceptional talent and hard work, setting high expectations for the upcoming season.

For Crawley, the accolade is both an acknowledgment of his dedication and a source of motivation.

“It was a great feeling, man. Just to understand that, you know, my hard work hasn’t been unnoticed,” Crawley shared. “I’m just using it to motivate me for the season and for my team. I’m really looking forward to this season, really excited. I’m loving the new staff and I’m ready to roll out.”

Crawley’s journey to Grambling State has been marked by significant transitions. Initially starting at Alabama State, he made the move to Grambling within the conference. Despite facing different coaching systems each year, Crawley has adapted and thrived.

“With all my years of being in college football, I kind of had a coaching change each year. So it’s been great, man. Not hard to adjust,” he said. “Coach Dooley, he loves to throw it. It falls in my, you know, play. So I love it, man. Great experience.”

Understanding the legacy of great quarterbacks at Grambling State University, such as James “Shack” Harris, Doug Williams, Bruce Eugene and Devante Kincade, Myles Crawley feels honored and prepared to step into those shoes.

Grambling State University, Myles Crawley

“How can you not? Whether you go to Grambling or not, you always hear about those guys, because they’ve been impactful, not just for Grambling but for the HBCUs and the SWAC,” he acknowledged. “It’s some hard shoes to fill, but I’m taking on the challenge. I love the pressure; I always had to beat the odds growing up.”

A poignant aspect of Crawley’s journey is his tribute to his late brother, whom he honors with a necklace he wears at all times.

“Wearing this necklace just makes me feel like he’s always with me, you know, take him everywhere I go. So, you know, I’m doing this for him.”

Grambling State’s head coach, Mickey Joseph, praised Crawley’s growth and resilience.

“Myles and I have a special relationship. We had a love-hate relationship in the beginning because I think he didn’t understand what I really wanted with him. But he really improved on his leadership skills. The kids really believe in him now,” Joseph said. “Myles gets it from me, heavy like anybody else, but he gets it more. He accepts the coaching. Myles is a pro. I’m just telling you.”

Joseph also highlighted Crawley’s perseverance amidst challenges, particularly noting his response to the arrival of transfer quarterbacks.

“He just kept working, put his head down and kept working. And that’s all you can ask of him. I’m really happy that he got the preseason honor because I think it’s well-deserved.”

The post Grambling University student athlete suing NCAA appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Grambling University women’s basketball player Brenda McKinney, is on the verge of a deposition stemming from a federal class action lawsuit she filed against the NCAA in 2023. In the suit McKinney accuses the NCAA of discriminating against HBCU institutions through its academic reform programs.

McKinney argues that the NCAA included metrics in its Academic Performance Program (APP) that it knew would have a discriminatory effect on its HBCU member organizations.

The NCAA requested to delay the lawsuit but U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark J. Dinsmore denied the request and set a deposition for McKinney on July 17. That happens to fall just a day after a settlement conference that’s scheduled for July 16. Judge Dinsmore wrote in his order, “While Defendant’s failure to have completed the Plaintiff’s deposition prior to the scheduled date of the settlement conference may well be a failure to properly plan its necessary discovery, it is neither good cause, nor an exigent circumstance.”

Arguments within the lawsuit

The Indiana Lawyer has led the reporting on this class action lawsuit, which was filed in Indiana, the home state of the NCAA headquarters. The publication reported in 2023 that the lawsuit includes an underlying argument that the NCAA doesn’t allow student-athletes to make or enforce contracts, which points to the national letter of intent signed by student athletes. In more specific terms, the lawsuit claims that an HBCU is 43 times more likely than a PWI to be given a postseason ban, which places HBCU athletes at a disadvantage.

According to the lawsuit, “Black student-athletes were not provided full information about the potential consequences of the NCAA’s discrimination against Black student-athletes at HBCUs. As a result, unbeknownst to them, they entered their contracts with substantial disadvantages and effects.”

Elizabeth Fegan, McKinney’s attorney, told Sportico that the lawsuit is related to the NCAA’s failure to live up to its own bylaws. “We are not trying to prevent the NCAA from monitoring academic performance,” Fegan said. “We want them to be educated and successful. But the NCAA promised in its bylaws to tie those measures to the student bodies of schools and that is where the NCAA has failed.”

Stance from the NCAA

The NCAA has maintained the intent of the APP, adopted by the NCAA in 2004, is to ensure all college athletes gain a valuable education on a path toward graduation.

The NCAA also contends that McKinney lacks standing to pursue individual and class injunctive relief claims. Grambling’s women’s basketball team has never faced an APP-related postseason ban, the NCAA wrote to the court in October, there is “no indication that the team is at any imminent risk of incurring a postseason penalty (or any APP penalty)” through the remainder of McKinney’s collegiate career.

Brenda McKinney is a junior small forward for the Grambling basketball team, she’s a native of Washington, D.C.

Doug Williams and the Washington NFL football franchise – now known as the Commanders – have a long-running relationship.

The Grambling State legend and Super Bowl MVP has been promoted to senior advisor to Adam Peters, the general manager of the Washington Commanders.

Doug Williams has had a significant and multifaceted relationship with the Washington NFL franchise, from his historic playing days to various roles within the organization’s front office.

Williams first made history with Washington as the team’s quarterback. The former Grambling State star joined the franchise in 1986 and became the first African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl when he led Washington to victory in Super Bowl XXII in 1988. Williams’ performance in the Super Bowl was legendary, as he threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns, earning Super Bowl MVP honors and cementing his place in NFL history.

Doug Williams, Washington Commanders

Williams transitioned into coaching and executive roles following his playing career. In 1994, he began his coaching career as a running backs coach for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe before moving on to various collegiate coaching positions. However, his connection with Washington was reignited when he joined their front office in 2004 as a personnel executive after coaching at his alma mater. Williams held several key positions within the organization over the years, including Director of Professional Scouting and Senior Vice President of Player Personnel.

Williams played a crucial role in shaping the team’s roster and player development strategies. His experience as a former player provided valuable insights into the team’s decision-making processes. In 2020, he was promoted to Senior Vice President of Player Development, where he focused on mentoring and supporting players both on and off the field.

Throughout his tenure with the Washington Commanders (and their predecessor), Doug Williams has been a trailblazer and a respected figure, contributing significantly to the franchise’s success and legacy, both as a player and as a front office executive. His impact on the team and the NFL as a whole is profound, making him a pivotal figure in the history of the sport.

GRAMBLING, La. | Legendary former head Grambling State Baseball coach Wilbert Ellis is set to be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 2024 Induction Class, with a ceremony set for June 20-22 in Natchitoches, La. The HBCU baseball legend will receive the Louisiana Sports Ambassador Award, becoming only the second person to be honored with this recognition.

The Ambassador Award was created by the Hall’s parent organization, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, and was first presented to network broadcaster Tim Brando as part of the LSHOF Class of 2020. The award honors long-term exemplary contributions to the perception of Louisiana by an individual who has ties to the state’s sports landscape.

Ellis spent 43 years coaching the Louisiana HBCU, assuming the head coaching role in 1977 upon the retirement of R.W.E. Jones. Ellis amassed a 701-478-2 career record in 26 seasons as head coach, retiring following the 2003 season. Ellis, who had his No. 31 jersey retired last season, led GSU to three SWAC Championships and guided the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

“Coach Ellis is an Icon; he is a living legend and it’s an honor to be able to have his presence around our baseball program and university. He’s a great baseball coach but an even better man,” said Grambling State baseball Head Coach and former player Davin Pierre. “His values and his love for Christ is an example for us to follow. He’s a winner on and off the field, he’s a community leader, he’s a husband, father and he’s Grambling. Having the ability to call him whenever I need him or just to talk about anything has been amazing for me. I’m extremely proud of his induction to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and can’t wait to share in the moment with him. Congratulations Coach Ellis ‘HELL BABY, WE GRAMBLING'”

Previously, the HBCU legend has been inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the SWAC Hall of Fame, and the Grambling Legends Hall of Fame.

He has been a trusted advisor for generations of presidents, athletic directors, and coaches at Grambling, and in community and governmental affairs. Ellis was instrumental in the establishment of the Eddie G. Robinson Museum in Grambling, and the university’s Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame. He still conducts baseball clinics for kids in Lincoln Parish and serves as an NCAA Regional site supervisor.

Wilbert Ellis will be enshrined in the LSHOF alongside Drew Brees, Seimone Augustus, Perry Clark, Daniel Cormier, Frank Monica, Kevin Jackson, Kerry Joseph, Ray Sibille, Tom Burnett, Bobby Ardoin, and Ron Higgins. He will become the 13th member of the Hall of Fame affiliated with Grambling State University.

The LSHOF’s Class of 2024 will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame’s home in Natchitoches to culminate the 65th Induction Celebration. More information and the opportunity to purchase tickets for five events is available at www.LaSportsHall.com.

Ohio State football will pay traditional HBCU football power Grambling State University a pretty penny next fall.

The two programs are set to meet in Columbus, Oh on Sept. 6, 2025 for the first-time ever. Grambling State will be paid $1 million for the game – a solid payday for an FCS program, but still a discount for Ohio State football.

The game with the SWAC program replaces one scheduled for Oct. 2025 with UConn. Ohio State football was set to pay the G5 school nearly double – $1.9 million – for one game, according to FBSchedules.com. Instead, the two sides decided to pull out of a deal that was agreed to back in 2020.

While it will save Ohio State some money, a $1 million payday is nothing to sneeze at. It is the same price that Notre Dame paid Tennessee State University to serve as its home opener in Sept. 2023. It is $100k more than OSU paid its first HBCU opponent, Florida A&M, back in 2013. OSU beat FAMU 76-0 in that game.

The game features two of the most historic football brands in college football history. Grambling State boasts 27 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships, 16 Black College National Titles and has produced four Pro Football Hall of Famers in Willie Brown, Buck Buchanan, Willie Davis and Charlie Joiner. The Tigers also cultivated Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams, James “Shack” Harris and the first player to be drafted to the NFL, Paul “Tank” Younger.

“This is another example of us being able to showcase our brand to a national audience,” said Grambling State University Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Travyean D. Scott. “We are thrilled that our players and fans will get to experience a matchup between two of the most storied football programs in the country. When you think of college football, Grambling State and Ohio State are two of the names that many think of immediately. This contest will allow our both fan bases to experience the cultural and athletic excellence of both institutions.”

It wasn’t a requirement but winning a NCAA Tournament game solidified Grambling head coach Donte’ Jackson as a hot commodity in college basketball. On Friday morning Grambling ensured that Jackson would hang around the HBCU ranks for a few more seasons, awarding him with a contract extension through the 2029 season.

“Coach Jackson is without a doubt one of the best basketball coaches in the country and we are blessed that he’s the leader of our men’s basketball program,” said Dr. Trayvean D. Scott, Grambling’s Athletic Director. “He has taken our program to heights that haven’t been seen for decades and we are confident that he will continue to be successful and mold our student-athletes into men who represent our institution the right way.”

Since coming to Grambling in 2017 Jackson has proven to be a consistent winner at the helm for the Tigers. He’s won three SWAC regular season titles during that time frame as well as three SWAC Coach of the Year awards. Last season was a real shining star for Grambling, winning its first ever SWAC tournament title. Jackson then won his first NCAA tournament game, beating Montana State 88-81 in the First Four. Grambling won then lose in the opening round after taking on No. 1 seed Purdue.

In April of 2023 Grambling extended Jackson’s contract to run through 2028 with a then four year extension.

Moving up the leaderboard

Even though Jackson has only been at Grambling for seven years, he’s already second on the all-time wins list. Jackson has picked up 120 wins at Grambling, only just the second coach in school history to past the century mark. He trails the legendary Fredrick C. Hobdy in all time wins at the school.

Jackson has twice been named the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year. During the 2022-23 season, he guided GSU to 24 wins — its most wins in a single season since joining Division I in 1977.

Donte’ Jackson was no stranger to HBCU basketball before arriving at Grambling. Prior to GSU, Jackson spent three seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. During his time there, he went 66-21 overall and won the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, where they defeated West Georgia in the first round.

WHAT IS NCAA APR

Courtesy of the NCAA

Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

The APR emerged when Division I presidents and chancellors sought a more timely assessment of academic success at colleges and universities. At the time, the best measure was the graduation rate calculated under the federally mandated methodology that was based on a six-year window and did not take transfers into account.

In addition to developing the APR, the presidents also adopted a new graduation rate methodology that more accurately reflects student-athlete transfer patterns and other factors affecting graduation (the new rate is called the Graduation Success Rate).

The APR system includes rewards for superior academic performance and penalties for teams that do not achieve certain academic benchmarks. Data are collected annually, and results are announced in the spring.

The Division I Committee on Academics (CoA) oversees the Academic Progress Rate as part of its responsibilities with the Academic Performance Program. The CoA sets policies and recommends legislative changes to the Division I Board of Directors which has the final say on changes in Division I.

HBCU baseball champs Grambling State University celebrated its first NCAA Division I baseball tournament appearance in 14 years in a truly unique fashion. Days after learning they would be heading to the Bryan-College Station Regional to face the No. 3 overall seed from the SEC, Texas A&M, the Grambling State baseball social media accounts posted pictures 3 players who had gotten tattoos of the team slogan, “Hell baby, We Grambling.”

The photos were shared with the caption, “Some teams do playoff beards…we do tournament tattoos🖋️ #HellBabyWeGrambling🐯.” If you’ve followed the Tiger’s SWAC championship run, you’ve likely heard it as the team’s rallying cry, but for a select group of Grambling baseball players, it’s become a permanent reminder of the teams 2024 SWAC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Grambling State University head baseball coach Davin Pierre shared why the slogan means so much to his team and explained its origins with some of the great HBCU coaches in the history of Grambling State University.

“It comes from coach Eddie Robinson and coach Wilbert Ellis! It’s about the passion they have for our university and athletic programs. And I’m just holding and pushing what they started. ‘Hell Baby, We Grambling’ means we can overcome anything, we can do anything, and the expectation is for us to be the best. It means we are family. It means we have respect for our university, it means that we just don’t wear the G. It’s in our heart and it means no matter what we will always fight for Grambling.”

Coach Pierre also told the TexAgs account on X.com that he told the team when they got to the SWAC championship game, that they would get the tattoos if they won.

“The tattoos come from a phrase we have: Hell baby, we Grambling. I said after we got to the championship game and won the championship that we’d get tattoos.” “When we say, ‘Hell baby, we Grambling,’ it means a lot of different things, but it means we fight for Grambling State University.”

Grambling went on to win the 2024 SWAC championship game with a thrilling 6-5 win over Jackson Statre on a bottom-of-the-ninth RBI to take home the SWAC championship trophy and the title of HBCU baseball champions, as the SWAC is the only Division I HBCU conference to sponsor baseball.

“We’re playing against the elite of the elite.” Coach Pierre said of the Tiger’s opponent, one of the top teams in the nation, “Texas A&M was No. 1 throughout the duration of the year and is the No. 3 seed overall. We have to earn our respect.”

Right-handed pitcher Mason Martinez will start on the mound for Grambling vs. Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Division I baseball tournament on May 31 in the Bryan-College Station Regional at 12 p.m. CT. on ESPN+.

The Manning Passing Academy brings together some of the brightest and most talented coaches and players from the professional, college and high school ranks to teach the complexities of the game.

Named the MVP of the Brick City Classic, Zellous led Hampton to a 35-31 victory over fellow HBCU Grambling State in the 2023 season-opener. Zellous passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 114 yards and two scores. For the season, he passed for 1,497 yards with 13 touchdowns and rushed for 559 yards and nine scores.

Zealous’ opponent at the Brick City Classic was Crawley, who participated in last season’s Manning Passing Academy. He threw for 2,312 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his passes.
